Engine‑
turned.

An identity for Halcourt Private Capital. It starts from the oldest sign of trust in finance: one engraved line.

Halcourt is a fictional firm.
Built as a work sample.
Plate 01

The idea

Before screens, trust was engraved.

Share certificates, bonds and banknotes carry guilloché. It is cut on a rose engine lathe: one line, turned around a centre hundreds of times. Nobody can copy it quickly. It takes patience and precision.

A private investment firm offers the same two things. So the identity is built from one line that never lifts.

Plate 02

The mark

One line, drawn by a formula.

r(θ) = R + A · sin((n + 1/K) · θ)

θ runs from 0 to 2πK. The line closes exactly where it began.

The mark is a formula, not a drawing. It stays exact at every size, and nobody can redraw it by eye. The same formula later gives each fund its own cut (Plate 06).

Engraving

24 turns. Above 160 px and on print: covers, film, signage.

Seal

4 turns. The standard mark, from 40 to 160 px.

Signal

2 turns. Below 40 px: favicon, app icon, small lockups.

Actual size: 32, 20, 16 px

Four numbers define every cut.

The three cuts share R, A and n. Only the number of turns changes with size, so the mark gets simpler as it gets smaller.

  • RBase radius. Sets the size of the ring.
  • ADepth. How far the line swings in and out.
  • nWaves per turn. More waves, finer texture.
  • KTurns. Each turn shifts the wave by 1/K, so the lines interlace.
Plate 03

Lockups

Four lockups cover every use. The wordmark is set in Source Serif 4, spaced wide, and outlined so it never changes.

Halcourt

Never retype the name.

The ring always sits left of the wordmark or above it. It is never placed inside a box, and it never carries a gradient.

Plate 04

Colour

Ink and paper do the work. Patina marks what matters.

Patina is the colour copper earns after decades in the open air. Nobody can rush it, which is the point. Sandstone comes from the stone Sydney was built from. It appears in photography and print, rarely on screen.

The rosette engine

Every fund gets its own cut.

The line and the formula stay the same. Only the numbers change. Fund III looks related to Fund I, and still nobody can copy it by eye.

Our visit on 9 October

Dear Ruth,

Thank you for showing us the plant last week. We left with a clear picture of the next ten years, and with more questions about the second press line than we had time to ask.

As agreed, we will send our first view of terms after our investment committee meets on 28 October. Nothing in it will be a surprise to you.

Capital for owners who think in decades.

Halcourt invests in founder-led and family businesses. We buy in when an owner wants to grow, step back or steady the ship, and we stay as long as the work takes.

II

Succession

When a founder wants to step back without selling to a competitor. The team and the name stay.

Special situations

Good companies under pressure from debt, a lost contract or a hard year. We move fast and stay calm.

Approach

Patient by design.

Most funds plan their exit before they sign. We plan the next ten years with the owner, then decide together when it is time to sell.

I

We buy into businesses, not markets.

We look for a product people return to and a team that knows why. Sector trends come second.

II

We hold for as long as the work takes.

Our funds run twelve years, with room to extend. No company is sold to meet a fund deadline.

III

Owners keep a seat at the table.

Founders and families stay invested and on the board. Decisions about people stay with the people who know them.

IV

We say no quickly and yes carefully.

You hear within two weeks if we are not the right partner. When we say yes, we have done the work to keep it.

From first call to completion.

A typical timeline for a growth or succession deal. Special situations run faster.

Week 1

First conversation

A partner, not an analyst. We listen to the plan.

Weeks 2 to 4

Site visit

We meet the team where the work happens.

Weeks 5 to 8

Indicative terms

Price, structure and governance on two pages.

Weeks 9 to 14

Diligence

Focused on what matters. Your advisers lead.

Week 15

Completion

Then the first 100 days, planned together.

What we look for.

Guidelines, not walls. If your business sits just outside them, call us anyway.
